TREATMENT

What is Bodywork and how does it differ from a Relaxation or Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep-tissue or relaxation massages have a full-body approach focusing more on relaxation and general recovery. This style of massage can address tension and body aches, improve circulation, and help regulate the nervous system. Although beneficial, it still differs from a bodywork session in that here we addressed a particular issue. Bodywork, structural massage, and medical massage can be used interchangeably. It is a targeted treatment that may involve other modalities like cupping or fascial scraping.

Some issues that can benefit from this style of massage are:

  • Sciatica/Piriformis Syndrome

  • Back Pain

  • Neck Pain

  • Hand, Shoulder, and Elbow Pain

  • Headaches/Migraines

  • Scoliosis

  • TMJD - Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

  • Psoas Syndrome

  • Frozen Shoulder

  • Foot, Ankle, Hip, and Knee Pain

  • IT Band Friction Syndrome

  • Plantar Fasciitis

Analyzing and searching for the source of the pain, discomfort, or restriction is always an amazing exploration of how the body is as a whole. The issue may not be the direct site of pain, but somewhere along the kinetic and fascial lines, or a resulting compensation pattern due to something else entirely.

Although it might not always be necessary, a pair of comfortable slightly loose-fitting athletic shorts or the like, and a sports bra or tank top are recommended. This helps to move on and off the table for reassessment or switching laying/seated positions as needed.

Understand that achieving lasting results takes time and effort. It's important to remember that massage is not magic, and it requires not only addressing restrictions and eliminating trigger points but also practicing corrective exercises and stretching to reinforce those changes and establish a new "normal". Your commitment to these efforts is truly important.

Alejandra in Brooks Rage

Having lived with chronic pain for the majority of my life, I was in awe when a friend of mine who was attending massage school at the time managed to put a pause on my neck pain by pinching a muscle in my armpit. I enrolled at the Florida College of Natural Health the following day.

After finishing school and achieving licensure in 2016, I focused my continuing education on musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology. I am currently learning facial distortions and kinesiology, and I've trained in modalities and instruments typically used in clinical settings. Because of my personal experience with pain, I've taken a special interest in neck pain, headaches, and scoliosis, but my practice is not limited to those issues.

The majority of my time practicing massage has been working with medical professionals, including more experienced massage therapists with the same practice goals, in chiropractic and physical therapy settings. This provided me with the opportunity to learn and receive guidance when approaching patients' unique chronic and acute issues.

The diverse population I've had the pleasure of working with has been a large part of my journey in developing my practice. Another form of study has been working on myself through analysis of how I move and what I feel, self-massage using tools like foam rollers and massage balls, stretching, and mobility exercises. This enabled me to get passed my pain and engage in activities previously seen as impossible.

Moving to Fairbanks from Miami completely changed my world. Now, adopting a subsistence lifestyle, and engaging in hobbies like backpacking, kayaking, and rock climbing, previous limitations due to pain are the furthest thing from my mind.

My goal, within my scope of practice, is to share the relief I experienced and enable others to achieve a more mobile and unrestricted lifestyle.
